Remarks by the President in Address to the Nation on the End of Combat Operations in Iraq
THE PRESIDENT: Good evening. Tonight, I`d like to talk to you about the end of our combat mission in Iraq, the ongoing security challenges we face, and the need to rebuild our nation here at home.
I know this historic moment comes at a time of great uncertainty for many Americans. We`ve now been through nearly a decade of war. We`ve endured a long and painful recession. And sometimes in the midst of these storms, the future that we`re trying to build for our nation -- a future of lasting peace and l

A hungry start to life for Pakistan’s flood victim...
Thatta, Pakistan — Jannan Soorjo summoned the energy to give birth in the filthy Pakistan graveyard that has become her refuge from the floods — but she cannot produce the milk to feed her sickly newborn.
The 26-year-old looks down helplessly at her crying son, who was brought rudely into the world early Tuesday morning in a makeshift relief camp set up in a historic Sufi burial site in the watery southern province of Sindh.
Wearing a tattered red traditional Sindhi dress with a thin scarf covering her head, a frail Jannan says she has not eaten enough to produce food for the baby — name

The Unraveling of Military Strategies, Thinking and Nations...
If President Barack Obama was true to his campaign pledge in ending the war in Iraq, he would have delivered his speech on August 19 instead of on August 31. Unlike Canadian soldiers who in 1944 marched triumphantly into Dieppe after having defeated Nazi forces, two years earlier on August 19 Allied troops tried to land at the French port. It became one of the greatest military disasters in history. In just a few hours, a courageous assault led by Canadian troops against the mainland of Nazi-occupied Europe ended. The attack, consisting of a Canadian Division, suffered an eighty-percent casual

US launches new Iraq mission...
US Vice-President Joe Biden launched a new American military mission in Iraq overnight, opening up a fresh phase in a seven-year deployment that has cost the lives of more than 4400 US troops.
Addressing soldiers near Baghdad a day after the US combat role officially ended, Mr Biden sought to rally the nearly 50,000 American troops who will remain in the country until a total withdrawal at the end of 2011.
The vice president acknowledged that the 2003 invasion had split US public opinion but he called for unity around the new training and advisory mission and said he believed the Iraq co

Miners` morale leaps as Chile rescue drill inches closer...
COPIAPO—The morale of 33 miners trapped in Chile soared Wednesday after music and hot meals were supplied, and NASA added its experience to keeping them healthy while a rescue drill inched closer.
A new video shot by the miners and broadcast on state television late Tuesday showed the men shaven, wearing clean clothes and listening to a tropical tune.
The figures in the images were a far cry from the haggard, mud-caked, bare-chested miners shown in a first video last week, days after they were located by a probe drill.
The miners have now spent 27 days in the San Jose mine in northern

ILVER SPRING: A radical environmentalist took three men hostage in a dramatic siege at the headquarters of a US television channel on Wednesday before being shot and killed by police.
All the hostages were unharmed after the four-hour standoff at the Discovery Channel in which suspected explosives strapped to the gunman`s body apparently detonated in a cloud of smoke.
Police said SWAT teams had fired on the suspect, who was under video surveillance during hours of tense negotiations, when he pointed his gun at one of the hostages.
"At that point our tactical units moved in. They shot
